French Onion Soup Chicken Burgers

Summer means lots of cookouts with burgers! I live for it. Marc and I have really tried to give up beef though, so I am always trying to come up with creative burgers using ground chicken, ground turkey or fish. My shrimp burgers, Moroccan chicken burgers and basil lemon turkey burgers are all fantastic options. I think these French onion soup chicken burgers are my new favorite though. It combined my favorite soup with my favorite summer staple and I was one happy woman. They were really simple to make too. Since we’ve had nothing but rain I couldn’t grill them outside but they would easily transfer to outdoor grills for a yummy cookout.

First, I caramelized three onions in some butter. It took about 8-10 minutes, and I added a tablespoon of water every couple of minutes just to keep them from burning.
While the onions cooked, I formed the lovely burger patties. French onion soup mix, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, and cumin gave them so much flavor. The mixture was enough to easily make 6 decent sized burgers.
Since I was stuck indoors, I used my trusty electric griddle for the job. At 375, it took about 5 minutes on each side to make sure there was a nice crust on the outside and the chicken was cooked through. On the second side, I added a big slide of smoked gruyere and covered the griddle so that it would melt nicely.

After that, it was just a matter of assembly! I put the cheesy patties on toasted buns and added a generous heap of the caramelized onions. Ketchup would have worked, but I actually loved using HP sauce for this. The vinegary brown sauce really enhanced everything going on with the burgers. These babies are such a fun summer dinner, hope you all love them as much as we did! xoxo

Ingredients
  • 1/2 stick butter
  • 3 whole onions thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons water
  • 2 pounds ground chicken
  • 1 tablespoon dry French onion soup mix
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 pinch black pepper
  • 6 slices smoked gruyere cheese
  • 6 whole hamburger buns toasted
Instructions
  1. First, caramelize the onions. Heat the butter in a large skillet over medium high heat, then add the onions. Turn the heat to medium and let the onions cook for 8-10 minutes. Every couple of minutes, add a tablespoon of water to keep the bottom from burning the onions. Stir them often and let the onions become a lovely golden brown color. Set them aside when they are done. Meanwhile, make the burger patties. Combine the ground chicken, onion soup mix, Dijon, cumin, garlic powder, salt and pepper in a bowl and work it all together thoroughly with clean hands. Either have your grill heated up or heat an indoor electric griddle to 375. Form the mixture you made into 6 equal patties.

  2. Cook the burgers for 5 minutes on each side to get a nice crust on the outside and cook the chicken all the way through. On the second side, add the cheese and cover the burgers so that it melts nicely. When the burgers are done, place them on the toasted buns and top them all with a generous heap of the caramelized onions. Finish with ketchup, HP sauce, mayo, or mustard, whichever you like. Serve immediately with your favorite sides and enjoy!!
