Honey Sesame Chicken and Broccoli

Marc and I absolutely love our Chinese takeout. I always go for dumplings and shrimp lo mein while his absolute favorite is sesame chicken. When I went to culinary school in the earlier days of our relationship, I brought home samples of everything I made for him to try. During our Asian cuisine section, he was so happy when I brought home his favorite. So this week I decided to make it again and modify it for the slow cooker. That way I could go about my day and not babysit it. I loved how simple it was to make!

First, I coated my diced up chicken in some corn starch. Then when I browned it, it developed this wonderful layer of texture. It also thickened the whole honey sesame chicken.
After that, I just put everything in the slow cooker. There was lots of garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, honey, and rice wine vinegar for loads of flavor.
After three hours of cooking, I added in a chopped up head of broccoli to cook for the final hour. The color and smell were both so rich already! My final touch was stirring in sesame seeds at the end.

That was all there was to it! I just served the honey sesame chicken with rice and extra sesame seeds on top for garnish. Oh my goodness, my husband makes a very specific face when something I make is REALLY good and he made that face this time. I was so happy to make his favorite takeout dish at home. Hope you all love it too! xoxo

Ingredients
  • 2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts diced into 2 inch pieces
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch divided, plus an additional 1/4 teaspoon for near the end
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil divided
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/2 cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 6 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar
  • 1 head broccoli cut into bite sized florets
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds plus additional for garnish on top
Instructions
  1. First, mix the diced chicken and two tablespoons of the corn starch in a bowl so that the chicken gets coated. Then heat 1 tablespoon of the sesame oil in a large skillet and brown the chicken for just a couple of minutes on the outside. It does not need to be cooked through at this time. Then transfer the chicken to a slow cooker. Mix the remaining two tablespoons of corn starch with the water to create a slurry and pour it into the slow cooker with the chicken. Finally, add the garlic, soy sauce, honey, and rice wine vinegar. Stir it all together and turn the heat to low. Seal the slow cooker and let it all cook for 3 hours.

  2. When the 3 hours are up, add the broccoli florets and the final 1/4 teaspoon of corn starch to thicken it all more. Seal the slow cooker again and let it all cook for another hour to hour and a half. Stir in the sesame seeds at the end just so they get fragrant. Serve it immediately with rice and extra sesame seeds on top for an easy meal that will be even better than your favorite takeout!

Hubby and I are pretty addicted to Chinese take-out as well. My sister always tells me “you know that stuff is super easy to make right?” haha I guess I should go ahead and just try this recipe out and stop getting take-out so much.
