Hamilton Chicago

You all know I love to both watch and perform musical theatre. There is really nothing like being in a live theatre either in the audience or on stage soaking up the atmosphere, the reactions and the applause. I’ve talked before about my experiences seeing The Great Comet of 1812 and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. I know this isn’t food related, but it’s a part of my life I wanted to share with you and I hope you’ll read on! Hamilton Chicago is more than a musical, it’s a phenomenon and it was truly thrilling to see.

Marc and I were in Chicago because he had a conference. I joined him a couple of days later to tag along and spend some quality time with him. When we planned the trip, we looked at how much tickets would be for Hamilton there and were astonished. It was 1/5 the price of a ticket in NYC. We literally flew to Chicago and got tickets for cheaper than it would be for us to see it on broadway a short train ride from where we live. Before the show, a dinner of deep dish pizza with a sausage patty, peppers and onions was a must. See, I brought in some food, haha! 🙂
I have to be cliche…I was finally in the room where it happens. Look at that set! It works so well in its simplicity and functionality with the rotating circle for some of the numbers. The gang plank that Hamilton walks down when he arrives in NYC is so cool. When the lights went down and the orchestra struck up those iconic opening chords the whole place went nuts.
An obligatory playbill selfie for Hamilton Chicago, but make it pride themed. I was basically losing my mind during the whole show. There are some incredibly hilarious moments, mostly at the hands of King George III. Then there were times I was close to sobbing. If you’re not familiar with the show I am not going to spoil it for you but it really takes you on a full rollercoaster ride. It follows Hamilton as he arrives a young man into New York from the Caribbean after a devastating hurricane destroys his home, and his writings about it catch the attention of some of the elite. You go through much of his life as he fights in the revolution, becomes a trusted right hand man to George Washington, fights for our constitution, finds love and loss, and finally the infamous duel with his frenemy/rival Aaron Burr.

The music is a dizzying and incredible work of lyric virtuosity. The word play is always so imaginative and so is the music behind it. Only Lin-Manuel Miranda could come up with a show that tells the story of our nation’s founding through a mix of rap, R & B, classic ballads, and even some British pop. As both a musical theatre and history buff Hamilton Chicago completely spoke to my soul, and watching the immense talent of the cast on that stage was nothing short of breathtaking. I hope you all enjoyed my summary of one of the best pieces of musical theatre ever written. Let me know what you think in the comments, and if you’ve seen the show please share your thoughts!! xoxo

  1. It looks like you had a wonderful time! I love musicals. The first I ever saw live was Phantom of the Opera. An incredible experience I will never forget!
